After so many days beavering away in the Actionaid office in downtown Dhaka, working with AA Bangladesh’s dream team to get their blog up and running, we’re finally out in the field.

Yesterday, literally. Today – more concrete jungle, than lush cane fields. Oh rural Bangladesh, how I miss thee.

But I digress. Mind’s drifting back to the serenity. Oh the serenity…

Today we hop in van with Hasan, Amir and Towfic – los tres amigos Bangladeshi, and take off for Mohammadpur, in the city’s west. We were here last week for the dusty but thrilling 1Goal soccer match.

We arrive at the office and, as usual, a very formal setting awaits – like King Arthur’s round table, but kids instead of knights. We’re meeting with the Community Journalist’s Group (CJG). Sharna talked about CJGs yesterday, and it’s an awesome initiative. Read the rest of this entry »

Sitting in a Sydney café, bundled up in jacket and scarf, as the icy rain pelts down outside. Light flickers from my laptop’s shimmering screen – the only warmth on this drabbest of days. Locals shuffle past, musing on what shade of pink Mat Preston’s pants will be tonight on MasterChef, and if they’ll match his cravat.

Hmm… food for thought, and really does help us through these dreary winter days.

But wait. Suddenly it hits me with the force of a rapidly descending mini-grand piano landing on my head that Sharna and I will be in face-meltingly hot Dhaka in a matter of days.  Our realities will be up-ended, like a flipped Chapati frying in a Bangladeshi street stall.

In my first pre-departure TOTO blog, I want to thank the magic that is the World Wide Web. With just three weeks to go before Joel and I jet off to Bangladesh, my life has become a flurry of vaccinations, preparations, nerves, excitement and a never-ending stream of university work that must be completed before I leave.

Bangladesh here we come! In just a few weeks we’ll be arriving in Dhaka as the next Outreach Bloggers, and I’m doing some rigorous pre-departure research to get a feel for the place.

That’s right – like every expert in the field, I Google it.

First site that pops up: Wikipedia. “Pffft…Skip that.”

Second site is the CIA World Factbook. Sounds kind of conspiratorial, but let’s have a squiz anyway.

facebookbrainAre you a blogger or a social media power-user? If so, please read on – we need to borrow your brains for Project TOTO.

ActionAid is putting together a Blog Training Guide for our outreach bloggers Sharna and Joel to use when training the locals in Bangladesh next month and we’d love your feedback on the suggested content.

Below is a (very) rough outline for a Blogger Training Guide we’ve thrown together. But, before we go any further with developing the guide, we thought it might be worth asking you, as a social media savvy TOTO supporter, for your feedback.

Back in July 2009, ActionAid launched a nationwide hunt to find our next outreach blogger for Project TOTO. Eight months, 52 nominees, 12 finalists and three challenges later, we’ve made a decision.

But there’s a twist.

After putting our 12 finalists through three carefully designed challenges we were unable to identify a single perfect outreach blogger.

Instead we found two.
