Founder Editor of CJG

The founder and Editor of the Community Journalist Group (CJG) is Mahbub Hasan, Manager-Sponsorship (2007-2010) and STARR (Sponsorship Team of Asia Regional Resources) Coordinator (2008-2010) of ActionAid. Community Journalist Group is a initiative to focus children, women and the marginalised people, help them grow as active citizens and become active in claiming their own rights.       

The aim of CJG is to prepare features on the achievements, problems and prospects of the children, women and the marginalised. To solve local problems, the Groups would lobby directly with local stakeholders and also by engaging policy makers in a blog-based communications online. The whole process would ensure direct and more active participation of the community people in the collective efforts for development and eradication of poverty.       

Mahbub Hasan is a social researcher, trainer and a development activist. He received his Bachelors and Master degrees from the University of Dhaka. He was awarded M.Phil degree from the University of Dhaka for conducting research on the ethnicity issues of Bangladesh. The title of the M.Phil thesis is “Changing  Lifestyles of the Santals of the Barind Tract”. Under the same University, Hasan also conducted Ph.D research titled “Well-being and Entitlement of People in Local Government System of Bangladesh: An Anthropological Study.”       

Mahbub Hasan served different development organisations nationally and internationally which are ActionAid, Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). He has twelve years experience in development sector including three years direct working experience at community level. Hasan’s major interests and skills are in fundraising, communications, project management, capacity building and social research. His research and training experience, and development interests lie in livelihood, governance, ethnicity and gender.       

Hasan’s experience as a development activist and innovative fundraiser have been instrumental in several books. Sponsorship Communications Training Manual is a detailed approach to communication tools and strategies related to Child Sponsorship fundraising. Grassroots Journalism is his made-easy approach to basic journalism connected to local level advocacy for positive change in the lives of poor people. Hasan’s keen development interest has drawn him to study livelihood conditions of the indegenous people and publish findings as Livelihoods of the Santals: Contemporary Change Dynamics. He also published several articles on the language movement of Bangladesh and the War of Independence.

Hasan is married to Shahnara Khandaker Rini, who holds a Masters degree from Psychology from the University of Dhaka. Rini’s interest lies in child development and psychology. She worked in the Education Programme (UNIQUE Project) of Dhaka Ahsania Mission for two years. Hasan and Rini are parents to Anuva Hasan – a energetic and creative 7 year old girl.
