Today’s an exciting day for ActionAid as Outreach Bloggers Sharna Bremner and Joel Katz head to Bangladesh to establish a blogging post as part of Project TOTO. You’ll have a chance to follow their journey on the ActionAid Blog at http://blogs.actionaid.org.au/toto/

One of the problems in communicating poverty and injustice to an external audience is the fact that the root causes of poverty can be invisible to the outsider.  This experience will take Sharna and Joel into the middle of poor people’s worlds  and enable the guys to get a feel for the daily struggle that people living in extreme poverty face.

They will also hopefully feel a sense of the euphoria that accompanies a small win in the fight against poverty and its these wins that keep us all dedicated to this fight!

I’ve really enjoyed following Stilgherrian on Twitter as Toto visits Africa “again”.  Come to think of it I’m not sure that Toto (the band) ever visited Africa, although that film clip has a touch of Africa about it…. but maybe I’m being too generous!

Stilgherrian’s journey in Tanzania has been a busy one. As soon as he arrived on Saturday he went straight from an international flight to Dar es Salaam to a domestic flight to Zanzibar and then spent most of that day and evening with ActionAid staff members in the office.

So it’s actually real. Stilgherrian is in Africa.

But the confirmation just landed in my inbox that Stil is well and truly on the ground in Tanzania - I have pictures!

archielawtwitterOne of the most exciting things about the launch of ActionAid Australia is our engagement with social media. Please keep in mind that this excitement is coming from a mid-40 something (and I know age is no excuse) who missed MySpace, missed Facebook and almost missed Twitter (I signed up in May)!

The social media trip has been a really steep learning curve for me and I’ve been lucky to have some terrific mentors in Fi Bendall and the Australian blogger Stilgherrian. The folks at Stilgherrian’s blog also helped me a bunch when I bounded into their virtual lounge room and started getting into a few verbal stoushes over women’s rights.

I am absolutely passionate about women’s rights given some of the things I’ve seen in my life, but it took me some time to realise that I couldn’t just launch into these issues with Stilgherrian’s friends until I’d built some relationships in their space.
