Everyone is talking about the Carbon Pollution Reduction Schemes (CPRS) in Australia this week – the climate change legislation Australia had to have… a watered down compromise to reduce the risk of the big polluters causing unemployment carnage if there is a small reduction in their fat profits.

Climate Debt Collectors

Some in the green movement say that “the legislation is a start and we have to start somewhere” whilst others note that “it would be better to have no legislation at all rather than a fundamentally flawed piece of legislation”.  So what’s all this mean?

“How can we dance when our earth is turning, how do we sleep while our bed’s are burning?” – Beds are Burning by Midnight Oil

peter-garrett-flagI remember my first onstage encounter well. The year was 1984 and the Oils were at the peak of their game and they were awesome! 10…1 had recorded amazing sales throughout Australia and my band (Huxton Creepers) were playing at the Entertainment Centre in Melbourne before the Oil’s, who were on their “Red Sails in the Sunset” tour.

So there we were, four 20 year olds who six months earlier had been playing to 15 of their friends in a tiny pub and now six months later we had record companies chasing us and we were about to go onstage in front of 10,000 people. The dream sorta stopped there, as soon as the stage lights went up and our singer said “Hi we’re the Huxton Creepers” an orange went flying by his head and just missed my head and then the Oils fans spent the rest of our set throwing coins at us during the songs and then chanting “Oils, Oils” between the songs. It was a rough initiation but at least our road crew got to buy cigarettes with all the change that landed on the stage!!

archielawtwitterOne of the most exciting things about the launch of ActionAid Australia is our engagement with social media. Please keep in mind that this excitement is coming from a mid-40 something (and I know age is no excuse) who missed MySpace, missed Facebook and almost missed Twitter (I signed up in May)!

The social media trip has been a really steep learning curve for me and I’ve been lucky to have some terrific mentors in Fi Bendall and the Australian blogger Stilgherrian. The folks at Stilgherrian’s blog also helped me a bunch when I bounded into their virtual lounge room and started getting into a few verbal stoushes over women’s rights.

I am absolutely passionate about women’s rights given some of the things I’ve seen in my life, but it took me some time to realise that I couldn’t just launch into these issues with Stilgherrian’s friends until I’d built some relationships in their space.

This being my first ever blog post, I though I’d start by telling you a little bit about myself — where I come from and why I’ve dedicated a good chunk of my life to working in the sometimes frustrating, but always inspiring, international humanitarian and development sector.

My ride through this life has been an eventful one and I guess people who knew me in my early 20s might be surprised to learn where I’ve ended up today.

I spent much of my youth playing with the Melbourne band Huxton Creepers and it’s always interesting describing what sort of band we were… I’m usually happy enough to say we were like the Hoodoo Gurus but not as famous! But we sure had our moments, tours with my heroes such as the Ramones were great times and it’s nice to have three albums worth of material to look back on. When the Creepers wound up I travelled extensively with my wife Jenny and at this time decided I’d like to really get involved in international development when I returned to Australia.
