Thanks to the efforts of ActionAid and local partner Cozpam, the community school of Philippeaux was able to resume classes on 5 April outdoors under tarpaulins. During the first week, teachers, including Gurriette Etienne (pictured), held psychosocial activities with the children to help them work through some of the trauma caused by the January earthquakes. Schooling will be conducted under the tarpaulins until the aftershocks stop.
The January earthquake killed over 200,000 people as well injuring many more. Over 1 million people were left homeless. Many are too afraid to return to their homes out of fear they will not withstand the aftershocks.
ActionAid has been working in Haiti since 1996. After the earthquake, ActionAid was able to distribute food, shelter and support to 20,000 Haitians. ActionAid aims to help over 100,000 people by July as part of our three year rehabilitation program.
