I bless the rains down in Africa!

archielawtwitterOne of the most exciting things about the launch of ActionAid Australia is our engagement with social media. Please keep in mind that this excitement is coming from a mid-40 something (and I know age is no excuse) who missed MySpace, missed Facebook and almost missed Twitter (I signed up in May)!

The social media trip has been a really steep learning curve for me and I’ve been lucky to have some terrific mentors in Fi Bendall and the Australian blogger Stilgherrian. The folks at Stilgherrian’s blog also helped me a bunch when I bounded into their virtual lounge room and started getting into a few verbal stoushes over women’s rights.

I am absolutely passionate about women’s rights given some of the things I’ve seen in my life, but it took me some time to realise that I couldn’t just launch into these issues with Stilgherrian’s friends until I’d built some relationships in their space.

For us at ActionAid Australia, social media is a way to build connections between people in developing countries and Australians.

Most importantly, we want to help Australian’s understand that poor people in countries such as Tanzania are poor as a result of imbalanced power relationships, inequalities and injustice and not due to anything they’ve done or haven’t done in their lives.

While it’s essential that people who are poor receive assistance from organisations such as ActionAid, we believe that it’s equally important to;

  • help people to organise,
  • help people to learn about their human rights
  • help people to learn about the responsibilities their government has, and
  • help people to engage with their government and claim their human rights.

As part of this journey we’ve engaged Stilgherrian to travel to Tanzania to work with ActionAid staff members and poor communities themselves to get their voices online.  Stilgherrian leaves for Tanzania today (Friday 26 June), marking the real launch of the dreadfully named Project Toto.

Why did we called it Project Toto? The short answer is – we didn’t. It’s a name that evolved in true social media style on Twitter and has something to do with that 80’s band Toto and their big, if not memorable, hitAfrica.

I’m really looking forward to hearing a blow by blow account of Stilgherrian’s adventures and experiences in Tanzania, which promise to be life changing. I’ll keep people updated wherever I can through this blog and also on my twitter stream.

I can’t really sign off without a big thank you to the supporters of the project, Lenovo Australia for the laptops, Internode who are paying the bills for the Thuraya satellite phone, and multimedia phones fromTelstra.

Thanks for joining the journey!!

    Thanks for the encouraging words guys and I really appreciate your interest in the blog! There are a few learning pains going on, for example working out that this is a new comment and not necessarily a new post!! Ahh all part of the fun and I’ll work this out soon.

    I’m looking forward to hearing from Stilgherrian soon and imagine he is in Tanzania, Zanzibar to be precise, by now. It’s going to be fascinating to hear his thoughts on Tanzania and ActionAid’s work there. Exciting times !!
